Research records are dated October 24–28, 2026. Actual test-session dates remain unconfirmed; later pricing and usage updates are identified below.

Choose ChatGPT alternatives around the task you want to improve. Claude is worth trying for professional drafts that need to preserve specific facts. Perplexity belongs on your shortlist for research with sources you can inspect. If your work revolves around Google or Microsoft apps, Gemini and Copilot deserve a closer look at their integration options.

This review combines official product information with documented exercises across eight tools.

Quick answer: which alternative should you try?

  • For professional writing, try Claude or Copilot. Both preserved the key milestones in our email exercise.
  • For research with checkable sources, try Perplexity or Claude. Each supplied four answers with supporting sources in our Voyager 1 exercise.

These observations cover small exercises, not general reliability or complete test passes.

If you know Mistral’s assistant as Le Chat, Mistral renamed it Vibe.

How we researched and tested the alternatives

What the hands-on evidence covers

The author supplied 48 screenshots from reported sessions across eight assistants and six tasks: professional writing, source-based research, Python debugging, logical reasoning, information extraction, and practical planning. The inputs were original fictional materials and a historical research question.

We checked readable outputs against predetermined answers and inspected readable research citations. Later, eight Word response collections supplied seven executable Python functions for independent checks. These are document copies, not authenticated conversation exports.

Paid plans, different modes, and evidence limits

Google AI Pro is tester-reported for Gemini; the other seven accounts carry provisional Free labels. Exact session dates, locations, some model identities, and first-attempt history remain unconfirmed. Gemini and Mistral used research modes that differed from ordinary chat.

The exercises used pasted text. Uploads, integrations, privacy controls, and other paid tiers were researched rather than tested. Poe is research-only. Although the author has ChatGPT Plus, no matching baseline results were supplied, so this review cannot establish that an alternative outperformed it.

Recommendations combine limited observations with documented features. Detailed testing notes explain scoring, code checks, and remaining evidence gaps.

Eight ChatGPT alternatives to consider

Claude: drafting from detailed instructions

Claude, Anthropic’s AI assistant, is worth considering for turning detailed instructions into client emails or structured drafts.

For the fictional delayed onboarding guide, Claude retained the original deadline, revised delivery commitment, request for missing screenshots, and optional interim deliverable. Accuracy and instruction following need separate checks: Claude solved the scheduling exercise but used 21 words by whitespace count against a 20-word maximum.

Claude’s correct scheduling answer with a reason exceeding the 20-word limit.
The visible reason contains 21 whitespace-delimited words against a 20-word maximum. The schedule was correct; this is a specific instruction miss, not a failed reasoning task.

Beyond the tested writing task, Anthropic lists web search, file creation, code execution, and app connections on Claude’s Free plan. Pro adds higher usage and features including Claude Code, at $20 billed monthly or $200 billed annually, before applicable tax. Those paid features were not tested here.

Recommendation: Try Claude Free with a representative writing brief before paying. The observed draft preserved the supplied facts; it does not establish an improvement over ChatGPT.

Google Gemini: an option for Google-centered workflows

Gemini is Google’s AI assistant. Gemini Connected Apps documentation describes supported tasks such as summarizing Gmail messages and creating Calendar events, subject to permissions, account settings, and platform availability. We researched these integrations rather than testing them.

Our practical planning exercise offers a narrower, demonstrated example. Given a fictional workshop brief, Gemini produced the required 90-minute agenda and a budget totaling $282, with $18 remaining. The readable timing, ownership, and budget fields matched the answer key. Supply the constraints and check the arithmetic when trying similar planning tasks.

Gemini workshop agenda and budget showing $282 spent and $18 remaining.
Gemini’s workshop response showed the required agenda and budget. Google AI Pro was tester-reported; the exact session date and model version remain unconfirmed.

Its research response showed a different trade-off. Gemini used Deep Research and returned an extended report despite the request for a compact answer.

Google’s US subscription page lists free access with a Google Account and Google AI Pro at $19.99 per month, with higher usage allowances. Our tester reported using AI Pro, so these observations should not be presented as Free-plan results.

Recommendation: Consider Gemini when Google-connected tasks could justify another assistant. Verify that the connections you need work with your account. Our separate ChatGPT vs. Gemini comparison examines the broader workflow decision.

Perplexity: web research with sources to inspect

Perplexity is an AI answer service for web research and cited responses useful when your next step is checking sources. Perplexity’s search overview describes that search-and-citation workflow.

Our Voyager 1 exercise tested a useful distinction: when something happened versus when it was announced. Perplexity’s four readable claim-to-source pairings supported the corresponding answers. For example, NASA’s announcement was published in September 2013 and described the spacecraft entering interstellar space earlier. Keep the event date separate from its announcement date.

For a timeline, request both dates and supporting evidence.

The Free Standard plan offers basic search with automatic model selection. The current plan comparison lists three Free Pro Searches per day and describes Pro using weekly usage limits. These are separate from ordinary basic searches; older allowance descriptions should not be used as current guarantees. Pro is listed at $20 monthly or $200 annually; its paid benefits were not personally tested.

Recommendation: Try Perplexity as a research companion to ChatGPT when source inspection is central to your work. Our evidence does not support replacing an entire writing or coding workflow.

Microsoft Copilot: everyday chat and Microsoft app access

Consider Microsoft Copilot if you work in Word, Excel, or Outlook. Distinguish its consumer chat experience from features inside Microsoft 365 when comparing costs.

Microsoft’s individual Copilot plans list free chat access and Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 monthly or $99.99 billed annually, including Copilot in supported Microsoft 365 apps. Those integrations are documented benefits; our tests covered chat, not paid Office workflows.

In our fictional support-ticket exercise, Copilot selected the latest records, preserved a missing value, and calculated the requested Billing total correctly.

The writing response preserved the project dates and interim offer. The function in Copilot’s response document matched all approved numeric and validation cases. Its own tests contained a wrong expected result: a 5,555-cent cart with SAVE10 should incur 499 cents shipping, but one assertion expected zero. Correct code and correct tests need separate checks.

Recommendation: If you already subscribe to an eligible Microsoft 365 plan, investigate its included Copilot features before buying another assistant. Standalone chat users have no demonstrated reason to switch on this evidence.

Mistral Vibe, formerly Le Chat: chat and connected workflows

Mistral Vibe is Mistral AI’s assistant for productivity and coding, renamed from Le Chat. Its connected tools offer workflows beyond standalone questions.

Mistral’s Free plan lists limited messages, web searches, coding sessions, basic image tools, and app connectors. We did not test those connections. Mistral’s pricing FAQ states a regular Pro rate of $14.99/month, before tax, and a separate $5.99 eligible-student rate. These are advertised USD prices, not a verified account-specific US checkout.

Our exercises showed both usefulness and a reason for caution. Vibe’s readable workshop agenda and budget matched the reference answers. In the client-email task, however, it added that the “guide itself is progressing well.” The supplied brief never established that.

A client could interpret that addition as reassurance about completed work. When drafting updates, check every progress statement and commitment against your notes.

Recommendation: Consider Vibe for structured planning or a particular documented connector you need. Its fluent writing still required factual editing.

DeepSeek: reasoning exercises and code checks

DeepSeek’s consumer AI assistant offers a free starting point for readers who want to experiment with reasoning and code without another subscription. Its official US App Store listing advertises the consumer app as free. Sustained free usage and regional feature parity were not independently verified. We have not verified a consumer paid-plan schedule.

In our scheduling exercise, DeepSeek produced the correct assignments and recognized that an added constraint made the schedule impossible. That supports trying it on small, checkable problems—for example, arranging interview slots around a supplied list of availability rules.

The coding evidence was more mixed. Independent checks of its document-supplied function confirmed an incorrect shipping charge on an empty cart with a coupon. This corroborates the earlier reconstruction finding. Empty inputs can expose bugs that ordinary examples miss.

DeepSeek also reported that live-web access was unavailable in the captured research session. That limits this particular result; it does not establish that DeepSeek can never browse.

Recommendation: Treat it as a candidate for low-cost learning and independently checked exercises. Our evidence is insufficient to recommend DeepSeek for live research or production coding. Check current web access and test code before relying on it.

Grok: web and X-related research

Grok is a conversational AI assistant to investigate if public discussion on X is part of your research. X’s documentation says Grok on its platform can search public posts and the web. That is a documented capability, not an advantage established by our tests.

For example, you could ask it to separate a software company’s launch announcement from users’ reactions, with links to both. We did not run that scenario. Inspect the posts; they cannot establish how widespread a problem is.

In the exercise we did document, Grok solved the scheduling constraints and correctly rejected an impossible addition. Screenshot overlays obscured some extraction and budget fields.

The current pricing page lists limited free access and a Plus subscription at $8 per month, before applicable taxes and fees. Paid capacity was not tested.

Recommendation: Try Grok when researching X discussions is a specific need. Social-source access alone does not establish better research accuracy than ChatGPT.

Meta AI: assistance within Meta’s apps

Meta AI is Meta’s consumer assistant. Its appeal is convenience for small tasks within the company’s apps.

Our fictional workshop exercise provides one example. Meta AI produced the required agenda, assigned the activities correctly, and matched the budget calculations. Its compact support-ticket response also preserved missing information and selected the correct records. Try it for similarly bounded planning and summarization tasks.

Meta AI ticket extraction preserving null and reporting an open Billing total of 130.
The visible response retained the latest ticket records, preserved missing information, and matched the reference total. Pasted sample data was used; this did not test uploads or large files.

The Python function in Meta AI’s response document matched all approved numeric and validation cases. This supports the small exercise, not large-project reliability. File-upload workflows were not tested.

Meta says everyday Meta AI use remains free. Its paid Meta One bundles expand access to features such as media generation, with availability and pricing varying by account and region; we did not test them.

Recommendation: Consider Meta AI for occasional assistance where you already use it. These exercises do not justify replacing an established coding or document workflow.

Also worth considering: Poe — researched, not tested

Poe brings multiple providers’ bots into one service, with free daily points and paid options. It may suit readers sampling different models. Check each bot’s point cost and privacy disclosures; access through Poe should not be assumed to reproduce a provider’s own subscription features. We have no hands-on results to recommend it over the tested assistants.

What the shared tests showed—and what they did not

Writing: preserving facts while improving a draft

Our email exercise checked whether polishing a brief changed its facts. Claude, Copilot, Meta AI, and Perplexity preserved the visible milestones. Mistral added an unsupported reassurance about project progress. DeepSeek’s answer omitted the original delivery date, although part of its captured prompt was collapsed.

Claude email draft retaining the original and revised delivery dates and Mistral Vibe draft adding ‘the guide itself is progressing well.
The shared fictional brief supplied dates and commitments but no positive progress assessment. Claude retained the visible milestones; Mistral added the project-status statement. These excerpts do not establish an overall writing ranking.

For client communication, review three things separately: factual commitments, tone, and requested format. A pleasant email can still promise something you never authorized; a formatting miss does not invalidate every fact. Our screenshots support these specific observations, not a general ranking of writing ability.

Research: checking claims against cited sources

A citation is useful when the linked page supports the sentence beside it. Four readable claim-to-source pairings from Claude and four from Perplexity supported the requested historical answers. Some other tools’ citation targets were clipped, leaving those checks unresolved. Claude disclosed reading some sources as search-result excerpts rather than full pages; our source-support check does not prove that an assistant opened every linked page.

Perplexity Voyager 1 answers with linked NASA and JPL sources.
The captured response distinguishes Voyager 1’s interstellar-entry date from its announcement date. Our separate source check supported four readable answer–source pairings; this is evidence from one historical question.

Mistral’s research response illustrates a subtler problem: its Oort Cloud overview link supplied relevant background but did not fully establish the associated heliopause claim. A source can concern the right topic without proving the particular statement.

Gemini and Mistral also produced longer research-mode responses than requested. Judge research output by supported claims and usable presentation, rather than report length or citation count.

Coding and data extraction: checking against known answers

In the functions supplied in Word, DeepSeek charged shipping on an empty cart; Gemini waived shipping for a nonempty cart containing a zero-priced item. Both conflict with the supplied rules and corroborate earlier reconstruction findings. Claude, Copilot, Grok, Meta AI, and Perplexity matched the approved numeric and validation cases. Mistral’s document lacked runnable source. These checks evaluate document copies, not authenticated native exports.

Independent code-check matrix
Assistant Numeric cases matched Invalid-input cases matched
Claude 8 of 8 8 of 8
Microsoft Copilot 8 of 8 8 of 8
Grok 8 of 8 8 of 8
Meta AI 8 of 8 8 of 8
Perplexity 8 of 8 8 of 8
DeepSeek 7 of 8 8 of 8
Google Gemini 7 of 8 8 of 8
Mistral Vibe Not evaluated Not evaluated
Independent checks used Python 3.12.14, eight numeric cases, and eight invalid-input cases per supplied function. These results concern later document copies, not authenticated exports or provider-side execution. They are not full-task scores.

Interpretation note: Mistral Vibe’s document lacked runnable source, so its cases were not evaluated. This is not a zero score or a claim that the product cannot code.

Check empty inputs, rounding, boundary values, and invalid data.

The extraction exercise used pasted ticket records, not uploads. Seven screenshot responses showed the expected selections and totals; Grok’s fields were partly obscured. Its later document copy resolves those fields and matches the reference. This does not establish large-file reliability.

Gemini’s document includes Python and intermediate material before final JSON, a structured text format used by many applications. It therefore cannot be treated as a clean JSON-only copy. Original formatting still needs a native export. For work across a repository rather than one function, see our guide to dedicated AI coding tools.

Which free ChatGPT alternatives are worth trying?

For a focused trial, start with the job you actually need done:

Gemini also has free access, but our paid AI Pro sessions do not establish its Free-plan performance. The other accounts’ Free labels remain provisional. Check whether the allowance covers your routine.

Repeat one representative task across several sessions. Record corrections, unavailable features, and any limit that interrupts your work.

Paid plans: prices, billing, and upgrade trade-offs

Pay to remove an identifiable limitation, such as interrupted sessions or a missing integration. Price alone says nothing about answer quality.

Selected paid plans: These are advertised USD prices. The source record dates the original checks October 25 and the Google annual and Mistral updates October 26. Annual totals are paid annually.

Plan Monthly billing Annual billing Documented reason to upgrade
Claude Pro $20 $200 Higher usage; Claude Code.
Google AI Pro $19.99 $199.99 advertised* Higher usage and additional model access.
Perplexity Pro $20 $200 Expanded research and file-analysis access.
Microsoft 365 Personal $9.99 $99.99 Copilot in supported Microsoft 365 apps.
Mistral Pro $14.99 before tax Not verified Higher usage allowances.

Google One page showing the advertised $199.99 annual figure. The calculator retrieval is localized, so confirm your US offer at checkout. Mistral’s FAQ establishes a listed price, not a US payment transaction. Check taxes, promotions, renewal terms, and account eligibility.

Our only reported paid alternative used in testing was Gemini on Google AI Pro. The other paid benefits above are documentation-based. Consider annual billing after the service proves useful. Check existing subscriptions before paying again.

Privacy checks before uploading files or work data

Check training use, retention, sharing, and storage location separately. Paying for a consumer plan does not automatically establish business-data protections. The following are selected policy examples, not a privacy ranking of all eight services.

  • Training settings: Perplexity says AI Data Retention defaults on for Free, Pro, and Max. Its training opt-out applies prospectively; other service processing continues.
  • Retention: Google says Gemini temporary chats are excluded from model training but retained with the account for 72 hours. “Not used for training” does not mean immediately deleted.
  • Product boundaries: Microsoft’s no-foundation-model-training statement covers prompts, responses, and file contents in Microsoft 365 home apps. Do not extend it to every consumer Copilot interaction.
  • Storage location: DeepSeek’s policy states that it processes and stores personal data in China. Check whether that fits your organization’s requirements.

We reviewed these policies; we did not audit the providers’ systems or test privacy controls. Before sharing client material, confirm authorization and inspect connected-app permissions and public-sharing settings. Use fictional or anonymized examples while evaluating an assistant.

Should you replace ChatGPT or use a second assistant?

Choose according to the recurring task and what you would actually spend:

Your situation Next step What would justify paying or switching?
ChatGPT already meets your needs Keep your current setup. A demonstrated reduction in corrections or workflow friction.
Writing or research remains frustrating Try one free candidate on that task. Consistent usefulness across repeated sessions.
A free allowance interrupts work Check the lowest suitable paid tier. The specific capacity or feature you need is included.
You already pay for Google or Microsoft services Check existing entitlements first. Required integrations work with your account and permissions.
You want to cancel a paid assistant Compare your recurring tasks before canceling. The alternative meets them within your budget and privacy requirements.

Count factual corrections, missing requirements, source checks, and manual transfers between apps. A response that sounds better may take longer to make usable.

Our exercises support a shortlist, but they do not measure superiority over ChatGPT: matching baseline results were not available. Compare one candidate with your current assistant before buying another subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an alternative without signing up?

Yes. Microsoft documents Copilot access without signing in. Signing in adds features such as chat history and longer conversations. Guest access can help you sample the experience, but check whether the features you need require an account.

Can I move my ChatGPT conversations?

You can export chat history from an eligible ChatGPT account. That does not guarantee another assistant can recreate the conversations or their settings. We did not test migration. Check the destination’s current import support and review the export for sensitive information before sharing it.

Is using a model through Poe the same as subscribing directly?

Do not assume equivalent access. Poe uses its own points system, and data handling varies by bot. Compare the specific model, tools, allowances, and privacy disclosures you need; a familiar model name does not establish identical subscription benefits.

Start with one task before switching

The most useful ChatGPT alternative is one that solves a recurring problem at a cost you can justify. Our evidence makes Claude and Perplexity reasonable starting points for drafting and source-based research, while the other options offer different workflow possibilities.

Take one nonconfidential task, define what a successful answer must contain, and compare the correction effort. Keep the tool that earns its place in your routine even if that means keeping ChatGPT.

Detailed testing notes

Objective correctness and subjective clarity were evaluated separately on a 0–2 scale: failed, partly met, or met the criterion. Missing evidence stayed unscored. Correct case results do not establish a complete task pass or an overall winner.

The seven document-supplied functions were checked against eight numeric cases and eight invalid-input cases using Python 3.12.14. Claude, Copilot, Grok, Meta AI, and Perplexity matched those cases; DeepSeek and Gemini each missed one numeric case. Inputs remained unchanged and repeated calls were stable in these checks. Mistral’s document omitted its function and executable tests.

Nonbreaking indentation spaces were converted to ordinary spaces for Python parsing; the algorithms were not repaired. These checks do not certify Python 3.11 behavior or prove execution inside a provider’s service. Earlier screenshot reconstruction results remain a separate evidence record.

Saved prompt copies match the approved protocol, but exports were unavailable to confirm every historical submission. Word copies can change formatting. Exact original syntax, full response attribution, model identity, and repeatability across new sessions remain incompletely established. The sessions do not establish US/Pakistan feature parity.
